About WellTheory
WellTheory is a digital health company helping people with autoimmune conditions take control of their health through personalized care, nutrition guidance, and ongoing coaching. We're a team of 60+ passionate people who care deeply about helping our members reduce symptoms, feel better, and live fuller lives — while helping employers and payors reduce their spend.
About the Role
Autoimmune disease is often invisible, poorly understood, and disproportionately affects women. WellTheory helps people manage it through nutrition and lifestyle-based care alongside their medical treatment, and we need rigorous evidence to show what works, for whom, and why. As our first Clinical Research Scientist, you’ll build our research function from scratch. You’ll own the agenda end to end: designing studies, analyzing our member and claims data, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and turning findings into both commercial evidence and better care. This is a hands-on, senior individual contributor role with real influence over how our program evolves.
What You'll Do
Study design and analysis
• Design and run observational studies on member data, including matched cohorts, pre/post analyses, propensity-scored comparisons, and interrupted time series
• Analyze medical and pharmacy claims, covering utilization, biologic and biosimilar trends, and cost of care
• Write statistical analysis plans and do the hands-on analysis in Python, R, or SQL, partnering with our data team for scale
Publication and scientific presence
• Publish as first or senior author in journals read by clinicians, payers, and digital health peers
• Present at meetings such as ACR, DDW, AAD, and AMCP
• Lead outside collaborations with health plans, employers, and academic partners as WellTheory’s principal investigator, including protocols and IRB submissions
• Manage all regulatory requirements for our studies, including IRB review
Turning evidence into impact
• Work with care and product teams to turn findings into updated protocols and a more personalized member experience
• Shape how we capture structured data (symptoms, adherence, biomarkers, PROs) so future studies are stronger
• Help define our autoimmune population and cohort logic
• Create white papers and one-pagers that commercial and partnership teams can use with prospects
• Serve as our scientific voice in health plan clinical reviews and payer conversations
You Might Be a Great Fit If You...
• A PhD or equivalent research doctorate in epidemiology, health services research, outcomes research, biostatistics, public health, nutrition science, or a related field. Exceptional MS/MPH candidates with deep industry experience and a strong publication record are welcome.
• Experience applying real-world evidence methods (propensity score matching, difference-in-differences, interrupted time series) to claims data such as MarketScan, Optum, or HealthVerity
• Industry experience in digital health, a payer, or life sciences, or a clear track record of applied, decision-oriented research
• Fluency in Python, R, or SQL
• A pragmatic view of evidence: you know when an RCT is the right tool and when it isn’t, and you can build rigor from the data available
• Familiarity with how evidence is used commercially, such as employer RFPs and health plan clinical reviews
• Comfort being the sole domain expert, saying “I don’t know yet, but here’s how we’ll find out,” and working across clinical, product, and data teams
This position requires current work authorization in the United States. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship at this time.
Bonus Points
• Experience in autoimmune disease, rheumatology, dermatology, GI, or endocrinology
• Familiarity with nutrition and lifestyle interventions as clinical care
• Experience at an early- or growth-stage digital health company
• Prior experience building a research or evidence function from scratch
• Existing relationships with key opinion leaders in autoimmune care
What We Offer
• A team that genuinely cares about each other and the members we serve
• A fully remote company that gathers every year for an annual retreat
• A base salary range of $130,000 – $150,000 with meaningful equity and benefits. Placement within our range depends on directly relevant skills and experiences you bring to the role.
For your safety: Please remember that WellTheory will only contact you from a @welltheory.com email address. Be cautious of emails from other domains. Our recruiting team will never ask for money, fees, or banking information as part of our hiring process.
